ABOUT SWEET CHESTNUT
Sweet chestnut wood ranges from pale golden brown to deeper honey tones, often with a lively, open grain that gives it warmth and movement. Visually it is sometimes compared to oak, though it is lighter in weight and has a slightly softer, more relaxed character that many makers find appealing.
Relatively easy to work for a hardwood, sweet chestnut wood machines and works cleanly, taking detail well and finishing nicely. Its natural durability makes it suitable for a wide range of uses, from furniture and interior joinery through to more robust applications where strength and longevity matter.
The sweet chestnut we supply is milled from trees felled in and around London and the South East. Boards vary in tone and grain depending on growth conditions, but well-grown material is consistently popular, and good-quality stock tends to move quickly when available.
